Pastor's Ponderings....
"It's Time to Get More Christians Behind Bars!"
(Matthew 25:35-45)
How do we do as Christians in reaching out to "The People of the Five L's":
the least, the last, the lost, the left-out, the loveless?
In the 2005 movie, Walk the Line, Johnny Cash is played by Joaquin
Phoenix. In one scene, Cash is talking with a prison warden. The warden says,
"Mr. Cash, the record company asks that you not play any songs that would remind
the prisoners that they are in jail."
Cash responds, "Do you think they forgot?"
Another scene has an exchange between Johnny Cash and a record company
executive. The executive says, "Your fans are church folk, Johnny. Christians.
They don't wanna hear you singing to a bunch of murderers and rapists, tryin' to
cheer 'em up."
Johnny says, "Well, they're not Christians, then."
I thank God for Mountain Vista United Methodist Church…
• Monthly, we take 500 sandwiches and serve them to 300 hungry people.
• This year we will be hosting homeless families at Hilltop United Methodist
Church Hilltop House for three full weeks and next year for four full weeks.
• We take food and supplies to Crossroads Urban Center and to the South Valley
Sanctuary.
• We have a small supply of food available at the church for emergencies.
• We give meals, clothing, and gifts to the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
What about those in jail and in prison? What is our response to
these people of the five L's? Jesus mentions prisoners in the top six groups of
people who need our love:
• “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat,
• I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
• I was a stranger and you invited me in,
• I needed clothes and you clothed me,
• I was sick and you looked after me,
• I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
IT'S TIME TO GET MORE CHRISTIANS BEHIND BARS! How can we help?
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Steve
REFLECTIONS
These Rocks Will Rise Up
Matt: chaps. 3-4 NIV
Over the years I have heard many Pastors preach on how
God needs us to be His eyes, ears and voice on this earth. That He is dependent
upon us to carry out the word of His love, forgiveness and His plan for
humankind.
That does make a lot of sense, but is it really true? Is
God really dependent upon us? I would agree that God is counting on us to carry
the message, but is He dependent upon us?
We need to look no further than Matt. 3 to find out that we
cannot assume any position of privilege. Jesus while talking to the religious
leaders of that time pointed out that God could raise up people to worship Him
from the stones on the ground, and not to count on any position of privilege
with God. We were created to worship and fellowship with God but God could find
worshipers elsewhere if He wanted to.
In Matt. 4 Satan acknowledges God could intervene during
the temptation of Jesus to provide for and protect Jesus. However Jesus response
to Satan was, "Do not put the Lord your God to the test." In other words saying
that God's relationship to humankind is not based on miracles, but is based on
belief, trust, and fellowship with God. In the Greek and Hebrew scriptures the
word belief has the connotation that it is more than an intellectual
acknowledgement, but also a taking into your heart that which you believe.
So we come back to the question, Does God Need Us? Scary as
the thought is the answer is NO. God can raise up people to worship Him from the
rocks around us. Don't try to test God to prove a point or to claim a position
of privilege. Our relationship to a God who has changed our lives is all the
proof that is needed. If others can see the changes that God has brought about
in us—that is the miracle!
We hear people say, God is on our side. What we really
should be saying is, we are on God's side. (If we really are.)
Does God need us? No but we need God!! As individuals, as
families, as churches and as nations
Peace
Duane

Lay Leader Letter
Hello Church Family,
Well it is sure a busy time. I am getting ready for K-6
camp some of you are part of that or maybe going as a camper. We are getting
closer to our building expansion. I think about how we are going to raise funds.
Some people talked about writing a letter to their previous church families for
funds. I got a letter from a friend recently explaining a certain Documentary on
PBS called "The Mormons". I was rather embarrassed they felt slighted and wanted
to set things straight. I am going to talk to them about it, but it made me
wonder why we didn't get our own show; "The Methodists" A documentary by Ken
Burns (or Ken Pitts maybe). What would they say about us? We got our name from
some folks that were really trying to make fun of us, it was that name or the
Holy Club or the Bible Moths. Our founder was a Born-Again priest who got fired
up from reading Martin Luther's commentary on Romans. He got kicked out of
church for preaching from the isle way in the church. He went out in the fields
and went to work preaching about repentance and people turned to God. Once he
felt like he wasn't doing all he could because he wasn't being persecuted that
week. Luckily someone throw a rock at him so he felt better.
We have a great heritage in the west. In Utah we have a woman who ran a church
and loved people in a mining town. Her name was Ada Duhigg and she ministered in
a place known as Highland Boy. She lived and loved as God led her. Ada was noted
in a PBS documentary called "The Copper Canyon." It was the only Church
mentioned in the documentary and it was shared like this "when a miner would die
and they weren't a member of a church, and the other churches wouldn't do the
funeral, Ada Duhigg was always there to do the funeral." I think that was really
cool and she taught my Dad Sunday School.
Another Methodist out west was Jedediah Strong Smith. Old Jed was the first
white man to cross the future state of Nevada, the first to traverse Utah from
north to south and from west to east. Smith was also a devout Christian from a
Methodist background. His Bible and his rifle were said to be his closest
companions. In his lifetime, Smith traveled more extensively in unknown
territory than any other single mountain man. Most of the western slope of
Wyoming's famous Teton Range is named the Jedediah Smith Wilderness after him.
Some people use July 24th to celebrate his life.
I hope we leave a good legacy. One worthwhile of a film, but maybe I'll settle
for a quote by Jesus "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and
hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun
to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the
unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not
even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what
are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect,
therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Or perhaps "Be careful not to do
your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will
have no reward from your Father in heaven."
