My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven on Earth.

Pastor's Ponderings....
God Goes to Bat for Us
Andy told a story in church on Sunday. (Some people say Andy is a puppet, but
I don't believe it!) Andy and his sister were playing baseball in their front
yard last week. Andrea was standing by the front door pitching, and Andy was
batting from across the yard. Andy said,
Andrea pitched a really fast pitch, and I don't know how it happened, but
my bat connected with the ball! I watched the ball go way up in the air, and
then I watched it come down… right through the living room window! CRASH! I
was scared to death! I just knew Dad was going to ground me for the rest of my
life. Then something really weird happened. Andrea ran over to me and grabbed
the bat out of my hand. She said, "Go stand over there by the front door!
Hurry!" I didn't know what was going on. I just did what she said and went and
stood by the door, shaking like a leaf. Dad walked out the front door and,
boy, did he look mad. He saw Andrea holding the bat, and he said, "You get in
here right now, young lady. If I've told you once, I’ve told you a thousand
times, do NOT hit the ball toward the house. You are going to be in time out
for a very long time, and then mom and I will talk about how long to ground
you."
I couldn't believe it! Andrea let herself get punished for what I did. I
sure didn't do anything to deserve that. All I do is be mean to Andrea, and
then I hit the ball through the window.
Andy's story gives me a small glimpse of what Jesus did for me on the cross.
I should be punished for the bad things I've done, but God came to earth in
person to take the punishment for me. Talk about unearned love! All I can do is
give thanks for this undeserved gift by loving others the way God has loved me.
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through
him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in
heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because
of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body
through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from
accusation… —Colossians 1:19-22.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve
REFLECTIONS
A False Sense of
Security
Luke 12:13-21
It seems so easy to develop a strong sense of security when
we look around and see all the "things" we have accumulated and accomplished.
Life seems good, we have established an order to our lives and feel confident we
are in control.
I am reminded of a time back on the ranch. One of my duties
was to treat cattle for diseases. One of our bulls developed a condition known
as pink eye which requires treatment. If not treated it can develop into a
serious problem and result in the loss of the animal.
The bull was big, weighing about 1800 pounds. He had been
partially halter-broke as a calf. Not having a chute big enough to contain him,
I roped him and tied him to a large post on the corral fence. I used a nylon
lariat which was considered unbreakable. I tied him up real short so he couldn't
swing his head and proceeded to give him the required shot in the neck. He stood
there quietly watching me as I gave him the shot. After the shot I went to untie
him. He watched me approach him and as I reached for the rope, he gave his head
a toss and snapped the nylon lariat as if it were a string at which point he
walked calmly to the other side of the corral. So much for security!
The farmer in the parable felt he had everything under
control and was set for life. The lesson for the farmer was he had put his trust
in things that were of this world to protect him. I trusted a nylon lariat that
was thought to be unbreakable. I was safe only because the bull allowed me to
give the shot. The farmer thought he was safe because of all he had amassed, but
forgot about the most important issue, his soul.
Lord, protect us from our lack of wisdom and understanding.
Peace
Duane

Crossroads July Food Drive Challenge Tons of Success!
July is the month when Crossroads gets few food donations. A Crossroads Urban
Center board member, Scott Patton, decided that should change. He rallied fellow
members of his congregation at First United Methodist Church to collect food
during the month of July and they issued a challenge to other churches in the
Salt Lake Valley to do the same. Ten churches accepted the challenge of
gathering the most food per worshiper each Sunday in July. To make things fun we
decided to award the first annual Golden Celery Trophy to the winner.
The results were astounding. Collectively these churches gathered 9,226.5 pounds
in four weeks! That is unprecedented. The competition was keen among
participants. Here are the results everyone has been waiting for:
First Place and winner of the Golden Celery Trophy
Mt Tabor Lutheran Church - 11.3 pounds/person
Second Place
First United Methodist Church - 7.6 pounds/person
Third Place
Christ United Methodist Church - 5.1 pounds/person
Honorable Mention goes to St Catherine's Parish for being the only group to do a
food drive year after year during the month of July.
We would like to thank the additional participants for their efforts too. They
were Centenary United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Hilltop
United Methodist Church, Holladay United Church of Christ, Murray Baptist Church
and Mountain Vista United Methodist Church
Thank you for for your donations to benefit the Carmen B.

Ad Council Fall Planning Retreat – October 4th 8:30 a.m. - 4:00
p.m.
Last fall, the Administrative Council hosted a 2-day
idea-gathering retreat hoping that such a gathering might become an annual
activity. More than 20 members of our congregation participated in 3 extended
discussion sessions, out of which developed some very significant focused
activities involving our Mountain Vista UMC Vision Statement and several
meaningful efforts to improve our communication throughout the congregation.
This year, the Ad Council is again developing a fall retreat. The focus for this
gathering will be the development of both short-term and long-term plans. With
our new building finally into the actual construction phase, there is an
expectation that we will be able to begin using the facility as early as this
winter. The need for careful planning and policy development is even more
important than ever.
Everyone who participates in our congregation is invited to attend! Everyone
sitting on a church committee is strongly encouraged to attend and participate.
This will be a one-day session. It will be held in our current facility, from
8:30 in the morning until about 4:00 in the afternoon, on Saturday, October 4th.
That’s a Big 10-4!
So, mark your calendars and plan on participating as we begin mapping the future
of our church family’s adventures.
10-4? See You Then!

The AJ Dummer Story – part 2
The next morning I returned to the Doctor for the amniocentesis. After it was
over a counselor talked with us about terminating our little boy. In the middle
of this session I heard, "We are all Gods' Children and He has a plan for all of
us."
I remember the session ending with me saying, I think I
will leave this one in God hands. It was that moment that I knew this baby
wasn't really mine to keep, he was God's Child and I was blessed to be his mom.
On the way home Scott, my mother and I stopped at Blockbuster to rent a movie
and get our minds off of what we just heard. As I walked to the door my eyes met
an adolescent boy with Downs Syndrome. He smiled at me and I knew then
everything would be ok.
Scott and I found out on December 31, 2001, that AJ (Andrew
Jacob) did not have Downs Syndrome, but instead had what is called 18p-
(Eighteen P Minus). This is a rare chromosome abnormality that often carries a
heart defect. There wasn’t much research on 18p-, and it affected each child
differently; anything from being a little slow in school to being still born, or
requiring around the clock care. Still I prayed that God would be there and
guide us through to make the right decisions for AJ. As time went on it became
more and more about AJ and what he needed than what Scott and I wanted for
ourselves.

More exciting news to follow:
I'm looking at starting a Venture Program. I need some adult volunteers to make
this happen.
Venturing Program is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America
for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through
20 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help
young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.
Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship
between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities. Local
community organizations establish a Venturing crew by matching their people and
program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result
is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their
special interests, grow, develop leadership skills, and become good citizens.
Venturing crews can specialize in a variety of vocations or
hobby interests.
Please contact me if you’re interested in helping me get this program started. I
would like to start this after the New Year, 2009. If your son or daughter is
interested in this please contact me as well. Thank you!
