Sunday’s Recap: Unity of Praise

In our final week of the Praise Break series, we explored the good and pleasing unity created in God’s family as envisioned in Psalm 133.

This is a kind of unity that celebrates the unique lives of all people gathered at God’s table. A kind of unity where the goal is cooperation through sharing our diverse gifts, not sameness of mind, body, background, or even theology. A kind of unity that is blessed and blesses others.

God’s blessing is not meant to stop with us; it is meant to flow through us as we make room for others in God’s family.

God’s family is an ever-expanding circle. A table that always has room for more. We are called to continue that invitation.

And that call goes far beyond simply being welcoming. We are called to practice a radical hospitality that makes people feel wanted just as they are, not merely welcomed for who we hope they might become, or who we expect them to be.

Living into this kind of unity is another way we offer our praise to God.

And so we are invited to ponder: Who is God inviting us to make room for?

Monday’s Call:

Radical hospitality should not only be practiced within Sunday morning worship spaces. The invitation to make room for others in God’s family extends far beyond the walls of the church and even beyond the boundaries of faith we sometimes create for ourselves.

At all times, we are invited to see others as our siblings in the Spirit.

As you move through your week, consider trying one or more of these spiritual practices:

  1. 👀 Notice Who is Missing and Make Room:
Choose one person you might not normally include and intentionally make room for them.
    -Invite someone for coffee.
-Sit beside someone you don’t usually talk to.
-Ask a coworker about their life.
-Make space for someone’s voice in a conversation.
The goal isn’t to accomplish something. It is simply to communicate: You are wanted here.
  2. 🙏 Pray for an Expanding Circle
Spend a few minutes each day praying for people beyond your immediate circle.
Begin with the people you love. Then gradually expand your prayer outward: your neighbors, coworkers, community, people who are different from you, people you struggle to understand, and people whose lives rarely intersect with your own.
  3. ✍️ End the day with reflection.
Spend a few moments journaling or praying through these questions:
-Who did God invite me to notice today?
-How can I make that person feel wanted?
-Where did I experience God’s blessing today?
-How might that blessing flow through me to someone else tomorrow?
